NURS 6108 Epidemiology for Nursing Education and Practice
Personal Family Pedigree Guidelines
Purpose of Assignment:
The purpose of this assignment is to provide the learner with the opportunity to identify genetic/genomic factors that contribute to disease or illness in a population and to assess risk for disease or illness based on these patterns. Additionally, learners will have the opportunity to explore available resources and adequacy of those resources within the community to assist with health promotion and disease prevention of diseases or illnesses that may be associated with these genetic/genomic factors.
This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
Apply basic concepts and principles of epidemiology to current national and international environmental health care issues.
Discuss the role of genetics, genomics, and cultural diversity and their impact on health behavior modification.
TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE: 100 POINTS
Requirements/Criteria for the Paper:
For this assignment, learners will construct a Personal Family Pedigree, in narrative and pictorial form, identifying patterns of inheritance for diseases or conditions noted among the members of the family. Learners will provide a description of genetic/genomic related findings from this pedigree and describe recommendations for individual/family health behavior modification, including referral to appropriate resources for further information, based on the genetic markers/mapping denoted by the pedigree.
After reviewing the “Family Medical History in Disease Prevention” article and the “Your Family Health History” documents posted in Module 5 in CourseDen, construct a personal health pedigree, including at least 3 generations of the family. You may use computer generated diagrams for the pictorial display of this pedigree or complete the pedigree drawing by hand (which you will ultimately have to scan to post in the assignment Dropbox).
A key for symbols used on the pictorial display must be included (as noted in the sample provided in the “Your Family Health History” document).
List all diseases or conditions noted on the pedigree that appear to have a pattern of inheritance or a genetic/genomic basis.
In narrative form, briefly describe and discuss the findings noted on the pictorial pedigree. This description should be similar to what you would write if you were writing out the Family History section of a complete health history document. Complete sentences are required as applicable.
Identify and list two (2) reputable sources for additional information related to at least two (2) identified diseases or conditions showing a pattern of inheritance in the family as well as two (2) resources (either nationally or within your personal location) that could be used to assist with genetic counseling for individuals/families with the identified disease or condition. (If no diseases or conditions of this nature emerge from the pedigree, assume there is one (1) condition that you know shows this pattern and comment on this).
Based on the personal family pedigree, briefly describe the health promotion and disease prevention strategies to be implemented with individuals in the family to reduce their risk related to the genetically associated diseases or conditions.
This assignment should be 3-4 pages in length, including the pedigree drawing, but excluding title and reference page(s).
APA format is to be used for the title and reference page(s) of this document and any citations within the document (following guidelines from the APA Manual, 6th edition, third printing or later).
Paper will be graded on overall quality, and, where appropriate, use of citations, use of Standard English grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, and overall organization based on the required components as summarized in the posted assignment guidelines and grading rubric.
